i'm in this for myself.
January 5th, 2017.
New York City.
New York City.
The walk from a few days ago was something that she needed. It was a way for her to clarify her mind and melt away the rage that was building up inside her. She was frustrated, and perhaps she got frustrated too easily, but Caroline O’Hara Burchill was just tired of everything. The young woman was simply in the works of turning over her career after months of stagnation, yet it always felt like she was constantly being held back by some random occurrence of misfortune. Sure, she was able to beat the charges placed on her, but that never took away anyone's suspicions of her being Thirteen’s attack. In addition, people seemed to be in doubt when it came to the self-proclaimed ‘Killer Queen’, and all of the uncertainty was getting to her. It was a shift from the woman she presented herself out to be for the masses: a bold, pompous and arrogant woman who held nothing back and proudly claimed to the world that she was the best. However, every match she had made her out to be the unlikely winner; the one who had a lot to prove.
And it was all funny to her. Not long ago, Burchill had questioned her own career and wondered if she would ever have the one defining moment in her career when all of her words would finally be justified. She asked herself if she could really beat the best that was placed in front of her. She brought her own abilities into question, and for some time, the lack of conviction messed with her. Eventually, she broke out of her own pity party, but she couldn't help but to be bothered whenever a wrestler, a critic, a fan or even a random person brushed over her credibility as a potential star.
It was getting to her, and she just couldn't shake it off.
The whole Alpha Cup Tournament was meant for her to showcase to everyone that she could be considered one of the more upstanding talents in Alpha Empire Wrestling, and she wanted nothing more than to finally have something of note to back up her words so that she could say, “yeah, I'm that good”.
It wasn't about seeking the validation of others though. It was about seeking the validation of herself and finding a purpose for why she did all of this. It was beyond just the simple fact that her family were part of the sport. It was more than just having the passion for it and making it out to be something that she couldn't live without. It was the desire for glory, and the tournament was a gateway to achieving just that.
Glory.
All the past failures would no longer have to be painful remainders that she evaded. They wouldn't be looming over her like a dark cloud ready to spur up some heavy trouble. Winning the tournament would be the way to her own liberation, and maybe then would people finally see the true level of threat that she was.
Caroline O’Hara Burchill knew that what she was setting out to accomplish was going to be difficult though as she sat inside her little office, sitting by desk that seemed to be a part of her now. As she sat there with her little notebook opened filled with various scribbles and writings that constructed a game plan for her match and the entire tournament, she couldn't help but to be transfixed on a particular name that she jotted down ever since her third round match was revealed.
Aaron Pace.
He was a talented newcomer in AWE, though even saying that felt like an understatement. After all, he did put away Cyrus Riddle in the second round, and beating a guy of that caliber definitely placed an individual like Aaron in the upper echelon of the competition. He was going to be detemined and have his eyes set on continuing the budding streak that he had. As commentators described the match, Caroline was ‘in the tough’ for this one. She was made out to be in a precarious situation here, and if there was anyone that was going to take away her crowning moment, it was going to be the man that claimed that the Alpha Cup was going to be the Aaron Cup.
Even thinking about it, Caroline couldn't help but to let out a chuckle. He was hell bent on winning the entire thing, and while he was hungry for that kind of honorable distinction, so was she.
Caroline wasn't going to lay down for him. The wave of hype that he was riding on never mattered to her. She came too far, and she wasn't going to stop fighting for what she wanted until she let out every ounce of energy that she had and she was physically broken. If he was going to get through her, he would practically have to kill her when they step foot in the ring for the first time.
It sounded rather grave, didn't it? However, that was the reality of this entire thing, especially since it was well documented that Caroline was looking to win two tournaments in one month.
There was just too much at stake here.
He studied diligently like a true student of the game, but no amount of research could ever help him plan for what was to come. Aaron never witnessed what Caroline was like when she was at her most dangerous. As uncanny as she was, Burchill could prove to be unpredictable and, well... crazy, for a lack of better a term.
She knew that about herself, and as she sat there in the chair thinking about the upcoming encounter, a serpentine-like grin would slither onto her countenance as dark thoughts began to find their way into the inner workings of her mind. Come win or loss, Caroline O'Hara Burchill was going to make sure that Aaron Pace wouldn't walk away an unscathed man.
He was going to know first hand what it was like going up against a Queen.
"Aaron, oh, Aaron. My sweet little cupcake. It's cute seeing that you have all of this confidence within you. It truly is. After all, this whole event is rather exciting for you. You're coming into this tournament as a relative newcomer who has the aspirations of being the best wrestler that this promotion has ever seen. You're looking to send a message, and I'm sure you would love nothing more than to use the Alpha Cup Tournament as a big exclamation mark that the entire wrestling world can notice. Then again, you're the Ace that Sets the Pace, correct? Of course you're looking to make sure that all of your claims and promises are fulfilled. To come up short in a tournament that bears a significant amount of weight to it would be an embarrassment, especially for an individual that's been considered a rising star such as yourself. You went from beating a man that was formerly a glorified jobber to a man that actually amounted to something in this sport, so I guess I can see where you are coming from with this feeling that you can conquer the world. You even went as far to refer to the Alpha Cup as the 'Aaron Cup', a testament to the fact that you're the 'Alpha Male' of AWE. I mean, hey. At least it's a little less cringe-inducing than Anastasia Hayden calling herself the MVP of AWE."
"Moving on though, you've made some of statements that really gave me a good chuckle, such as the little bit where you said that I'm going to be a catalyst for your ascension. It seemed like you were making me out to be a stepping stone for you and, well, I think the whole idea is laughable because clearly you haven't done enough thorough research to truly understand what you're getting yourself into here."
"You see, Aaron, this match isn't something that's going to be handed to you. You may be looking ahead and already seeing your name up in lights as you dream about the possibility of your own ascension to the top, but I want you to wake up and realize what is happening in the real world now. There are consequential ramifications here in this match of ours. You may be looking to make a name out of yourself here, but the fact of the matter is that you're not going up against someone that's going to just lay down for you. To me, you're making big claims that reek of ignorance, and I think those wins are getting to your head. Either that, or you've been too busy feeling yourself that you have your head stuck up far in your ass. Then again, I suppose it's typical for rookies to get a little bit ahead of themselves when they've racked up a bit of momentum.”
"Still, it's all just confidence, right?"
"Sure, I'm far from being a person that has a high sense for morals and having an outstanding attitude, but when I smell bullshit, I can smell it from many miles away. This isn't going to be a one-sided affair where you'll be moving on with not a single scratch on your skin. Regardless of what any of these ass clowns say about me, I am by far the most dangerous when there is a lot of pressure on me. I know that people want to undermine what I can do and make me out to be a joke, but honestly? Fuck them. Majority of them can't even lace up my boots and do the things that I can do inside that ring.”
“Yeah, I am getting frustrated with the negativity and the doubt that lingers all around me. However, Aaron, winning this tournament isn't a means for me to earn the approval of others. I don't need that shit. I don't need the fans cheering my name or wrestlers showing me respect. The love and praise are irrelevant materials that I simply don't require, but that doesn't mean that I don't want people to realize how much of a threat I am either. All people do nowadays is focus on the downside of things, often negating the true worth that I truly possess. It is annoying, but of course, you wouldn't get that, and I think we need to get one thing clear:”
“I'm not here to seek the validation others. I'm in this for myself, and that’s what is the most important thing to me.”
“Did I let the doubt get to me? At one point in time, yes, it did. It messed with me for a bit, but that is all in the past now. I'm not worried about any of that. I'm just focused on this tournament and finally earning something that I can be proud of. However, it seems like people are mistaken me for getting soft now all because of the faults I've experienced and how I've acknowledged them.”
“And when people try to make me out to be weak, I come right on through and prove to them that I'm no one that should be fucked with.”
"I'm not being 'flooded away' here."
"I'm not in this tournament to receive 'sympathy claps'."
"And I'm sure as hell not in this thing just so that I can 'bow out' and have you take what's mine."
"S.O.B and Cyrus Riddle might have tucked their tails in between their legs, but I'm not like them. Not one bit. I want you to truly understand that. You're going to be in for a fucking battle, and trust me, I don't go easy. I go out with the intent to slay and stand above those who oppose me, and when we go out there and do our little battle, Aaron..."
"You'll figure out soon enough that you just can't keep up."
"The Killer Queen has spoken."
