We go to an area outside the FDR Skatepark under I-95. Kimitsu stands in front of the fence in front of a barrel as Aokigahara starts a fire inside it. Some kids fly up over them and are illuminated by the fire as they skate a ramp.
Aokigahara rummages through a box.
“Now I'm going to run down the list. This is for the opponents in the rumble and a simple introduction for myself in general. Someone like me should be looking up to everyone else in AWE. I should be honored to be in the roster with you guys but I can't accept that. Show me the first ones."
Aokigahara holds up two posters of Carmen Cambridge and Zack Fantana.
“Our Resilience Champion! I hope he's enjoying this. From what I've heard, he is. Being on top of the world and getting all that attention is great. It's what he lives for and he would do anything to get it, right or wrong. Same with this girl. Carmen sure does talk big. She even did the thing with the name.”
“People love to pick on Zombies.”
“My first time! Anyway I'm putting these two together because they’re good. Top of the class. They've accomplished a lot in their careers but they are hanging by a thread. They're each coming back into this fighting thing after some time off to heal their bodies. Well they're stepping off their ships and the Statue of Liberty is burried and lying on the beach. Things have changed. A new crop of hungry wrestlers has come to break their bodies even more to get where they want to be. I know that’s what I'll be aiming to do. One bad strike to the head or a sneaky jab to a surgically repaired body part is all it takes.”
She grabs the posters and throws them into the fire. Then Aokigahara hands her two and holds up two more.
“Trinity Jones, Austin Gale, Benny Stevens, and Sinister Minister. Jones I know you were trying hard in our match that first time but it just didn’t work out. Maybe I should have put you in the previous category until you can get over that mind hump you have and try again. You still won't be able to match me.”
She snatches Trinity's poster and burns it.
“Benny's a fun guy. Well, he used to be. He gets a little success in Texas and comes out of it with a deadened soul. Is he missing his Sons of Swag cohorts? If he can’t handle such pressures without his friends, then how can he be the Resilience Champion? I can’t allow that. Smile and pick up a dress, Ben-ja-min. You look hot.”
Kimitsu shakes her head and throws his picture into the fire. She smiles at the next one.
Austin I don't know if I should keep playing with you anymore. Look at me. I’m under a highway at night standing next to a hobo fire and burning effigies of my enemies. I feel great. This is natural to me. I look at you and I see a glint of a devil in your eyes. You are a distraction and a temptation. So in order to resist you'll have to be brought down a few pegs. I want to see how much you can take before you realize that money can't save you from everything.”
She winks and sets the poster on top and it burns from the middle out.
"I don't know about Sinister Minister. When the rumors spread that he was coming I was asked to keep a close eye on him but he seems harmless. He's just a man that uses symbolism as a scare tactic but maybe he shouldn’t have made it a positive symbol. What I do know is that if his boy American Tommy steps out of line when he's close to me then I will rip out his tongue and give it to the Minister to use as a leash.”
She crumbles up the poster and tosses it into the glowing barrel. Aokigahara nods and holds up SOB, Dominic Lawson and Colgate Carnage.
“Ah the old guard. These guys have this delusion that the past doesn't matter. They've been around the world wrestling and seem to have forgotten that this experience has gotten them here. I know it is painful to look back on but the reason you guys are here with only tainted memories to show for it is because you guys were never that good. I already proved this with two of you. I beat Lawson and Bitch because I don't see the world in a black and white tunnel vision. I learn from my mistakes and adapt. Y'all just trudging forward in the same track to failure. Oh, and I like how you can cover your bases, Bitch. You act like you only want to accomplish one thing in this match so that when you lose you can save face. A true veteran. Colgate I just want to take some of your teeth home as souvenirs. I'll take the donations at the rumble.”
She grins and crumbles their posters into a ball and throws them in. Aokigahara shows her the last one and she takes it.
“Amis Shelton. This one is the real deal, Uncle.”
“Complete the exercise. Burn that bridge, Lil’ Yokai.”
“I remember watching him that first time. He did what I thought was impossible and defeated Tokyo-sensei in a championship tournament. I was hooked since then. He has the right attitude, the moves, and the feel of a champion. People follow him because there is no question in his mind that he is the best and he shows it. Shelton is what I want to be like, but I know I should be striving to be better. In order to make this happen I have to put aside the fan. I’ll stop looking up to him and start looking through him. Through all of them and just set my eyes on the goal.”
She holds the corner of the poster over the fire almost reverently and it burns slowly as we zoom in on her watching solemnly.
