Tornado Desencadenado is sitting on a weight bench in what would appear to be a public gym. He’s hunched forward, his elbows resting on his knees. A pair of forty-pound dumbbells are nestled on the mat between his feet. He’s got a good sweat going; the sheen of it enough to accentuate his somewhat swarthy complexion. After lifting the hem of the neck of his tee shirt up to wipe his brow he addresses the camera.
“It’s pronounced ‘Tore-Nah-Doe Des-En-Cah-Den-Nah-Doe’; which translates to ‘Tornado Unchained’. I call myself this to honor my grandfather, who was nicknamed ‘El Tornado de Coahuila’. He was a boxer, not a wrestler; though he would have excelled in this sport as well. Back in the day or even now, ‘Tornado’ would have been a wrestling champion.”
The young man pauses, clearly proud of his grandfather but a bit embarrassed at the public commendation of him. He tucks his head in slightly, and offers an apologetic glance to the viewer before moving on.
“If he were willing to deal with all the craziness that comes with the job. Wrestling does more than just wear down the body and mind. Sometimes, and I mean this as a compliment, wrestling strains credulity.”
Tornado shrugs and holds out his arms in a gesture of benign resignation.
“But that’s what I love about it. Sunday night, at Massacre, there were three unofficial debuts to the Alpha Wrestling Empire, and each one had men and women doing things that in any other venue would have led to their removal or even arrest. In wrestling though, uncommon behavior gets rewarded. This can be either a plus or a minus depending on which side of the shenanigans you find yourself. Me? I was blessed Sunday. I got the chance to take part in an impromptu match in front of an appreciative crowd. Even better for me was that I won.”
The young man smiles broadly as he references his fight against Jack Hugg. He then turns serious.
“Others weren’t as lucky. It stunk Zack Fantana and Tommy Stone couldn’t have a proper finish to their fight. Or that the Paramount Division tag match ended with a betrayal and an ambush. The good news is pro wrestling has its own way to settle the score. The best possible way: in the ring. And I don’t think any company exemplifies this ideal better than AWE. Just look at how they handled their management issue back at Executive Action. There were no performance reviews or boardroom politics; just four determined wrestlers putting it all on the line for what they believed in. And the end result seems to have worked out, right? Right?”
Another exaggerated shrug from ‘The Fundamental Elemental’.
“So that’s why I became a wrestler, and why I signed on with Alpha Wrestling Empire. I think this company has the potential to be one of the biggest in the industry, and while I wasn’t lucky enough to be a part of its beginning, now that I’m here I hope I can lend a helping hand in building its brand. My first official chance comes in two weeks, at Sunday Night Massacre #9, where I’ll be in the match that gets to open the show. Even better, this contest will be the first of its kind in AWE: an Inter-Divisional Over the Top Rope Eight Man Battle Royal!”
People who have been working out in the background pause and look over at the exuberant Tornado. Realizing he’s causing a scene, TD tones it down.
“In the match we’ll have four members of the Paramount Division facing off against myself and three other Resilience wrestlers. It’ll be a chance to not only earn bragging rights for the division we compete in, but to show as individuals we’re among the best who fight under our chosen flag. The stakes are high for the Battle Royal, and I think it going to be the match everyone is talking about once Massacre is over. Just look at the talent involved:”
Tornado lists the wrestlers involved in the upcoming match.
“On Paramount’s side there is the Number One Contender for the Division’s title Aaron Pace, the Alpha Cup semi-finalist Caroline Burchill, and the two wrestlers that just beat the Dynamic Division champions: Jessie Roberts and Hubert Smalls. Fighting for the Resilience are three men who took their division’s title picture to the limit recently: ‘Daredevil’ Benny Stevens, Dominic ‘The Law’ Lawson, and this match’s monster Christian Jones. And then there’s me.”
The level of excitement in TD’s voice drops. His face becomes solemn. There is a tone of reluctance when the wrestler begins to speak of himself and his place in the match.
“I’m the new guy who needs a strong showing in this Battle Royal to make a good first impression among the AWE Faithful. I’m not counting my fight with Hugg; as tough a battle as he made it, the fans will be judging me on how I perform March 5th. And they should do that, because that’s when I need to prove I belong here. The problem is it’s hard to predict how one will do in any multi-man match; and Battle Royals can be especially tricky. There are just too many variables for a wrestler to prepare for. You have to keep your head on a swivel, and take advantage of any available opening. If you fail to do that you’re going to find yourself dumped out of the ring like so much garbage on Trash Day.”
Tornado Desencadenado takes a moment. He rubs at his strong chin and jaw thoughtfully. Then he makes this vow:
“I can’t promise I will win at Massacre, but I will tell everyone that I will not be an easy out. It is very hard to predict the path of a tornado. Those of you who will try to eliminate me need to keep that in mind.”
