A 1994 amaranth Nissan Sentra enters the DC Armory and Sports Complex in Washington. Joy Division's "Love WIll Tear Us Apart" blasts through the open window as an unknown hand is seen tossing a cigarette butt on the concrete. A couple of men, standing near the entrance door chuckle at the sight of the old-fashioned car, seemingly be holding up in one piece by dumb luck. As the music abruptly stops, the driver's door open, and Dominic Lawson sets foot on the complex hosting the first ever edition of Massacre's ground dragging his worn-out gym bag. After a quick look at the advertisement board, followed by a spit on the ground as he notices his name is not one of those placed upon there to drag fans to the arena, he walks towards the entrance door shaking his head. Whether it's a critic towards AWE or just the painful realization that no one will buy a ticket to see him wrestle, that doesn't change the fact that this day could have started better.
"Nice car, dude!" Says in obvious mockery the man with a leather jacket and has one of those faces you just want to punch.
"Bite me, dude!" It's the caustic response The Law provides him.
If it wasn't for the other guy holding him back, we would have probably witnessed a brawl between Dominic and Brad Stokes, AWE's color commentator. Instead, Lawson is free to stick with his program, consisting in an intense workout session, exploiting the equipments Alpha Empire Wrestling left at disposal of his roster, as we quickly approach the debut date. As he makes his way through the hallways, Dominic keeps his eyes on the ground, ignoring everyone around him. He seems focus, maybe feeling the pressure of what it's at stakes in his first night in this new working environment. The biggest chance of his career. The last one, probably.
"I can't fuck this up. I can't fuck this up. I can't fuck this up."
That's the mantra he keeps muttering as he steps into the gym. It's nothing impressive, after all AWE is just starting out as a company... Nonetheless, that's way more than what Dominic is used to. At least he doesn't have to share it with spinning fanatics and weekend bodybuilder... Even though he surprised himself staring at some of those butts wrapped in thick yoga pants more than once. And he knows he's probably going to miss that part of training in public gyms. Before starting his workout, he pulls out a boombox from the gym bag and push the "play" button, smiling at The Clash' "Should I Stay Or Should I go?" starts playing out from it. After turning up the volume, he gets in position to start lifting on the bench.
The footage cuts back to several minutes later. The song playing now is "Rock The Casbah", arguably one of Law's favorite as he sings it as he throws some quick jabs at the punching bag. Suddenly the doors open, and a gorgeous girl woman enters the room, grabbing the wrestler's attention. Sweating and panting he approaches her.
"Excuse me sir, can you please turn down the volume of your iPo... Oh My God!"
The tone of surprise in her voice amuses Dominic, but before he could even dream the girl was so surprised to see him, he can't fail to notice she's staring at the boombox.
"Where did you got that antique?"
"That? Oh well, I bought it several years ago, when it was still all the rage..."
The young woman smiles
"You're Dominic Lawson, right? I am Sasha Sloane, backstage interviewer here at AWE. I hope I can get the chance to have a talk with you on November 6."
"Why not now?"
"Excuse me?"
A little hesitation in her voice. She clearly wasn't expecting this reply.
"Look, I am done here, you can ask me the question you need me to answer!"
He sits on a bench, staring at her with a smile.
"Well, I can't do it right now. I was at a meeting with the rest of broadcasting team, that's why I came here to tell you to turn down the volume in first instance.... Plus, I think you will have more things to say after your debut match, whatever the..."
"You mean after I show those two young ladies how it's done you mean?"
"You look very confident mister Lawson, especially considering your career had more downs than memorable moments."
"Touchè"
"I know Kimitsu and miss Jones, you shouldn't underestimate them. That's just my unbiased advice..."
"I know Sasha, and I don't need anyone to remind me that my career has been a failure thus far. Not you, not any of my opponents. But things are gonna change, coming the first ever Massacre. When I started doing this, Kimitsu was just a barely walking, diapers filling little zombie. As for Trinity, she had already been in numerous fights, most of which against her bigger sister who discovered her playing with her make-up, trying to look just like her. That has always been her problem, the more she tries to step out August's shadow, the more she looks just like her. Except August is actually good. Yet, these two punks think facing me will be a walk in the park, just because my name has never been in any of those fucking billboards. November 07, when they both wake up in their My Little Pony's decorated bedroom, sore and aching, wondering what happened to them, do you know what's the only thing their concussed brains will be able to remember about their first night in AWE?"
Sasha shakes her head.
"All I remember from last night is that I fought The Law...
And Law won!"
Without adding another word, he grabs his bag and boombox and walks towards the nearby locker room.
