“Here’s the thing, I ain’t ever amount to much since high school. I’ve had chances and ideas but one by one they’ve all fallen apart. I could have gone pro at football until I blew my knee out. Married my high school sweet heart but walked in on her and my buddy Randy going at it. Heck, I was working for her Dad at the time. He said he knew it was going on and he was trying to shield me from the truth the entire time.”
Colgate shakes his head as he reminisces. His large frame a making it uncomfortable to fit in the planes economy sized seating.
“He said he’d keep me on, told me I’d be a son to him to matter what but I had to go. I’ve always been a man to look for the brighter side of life. When I missed out on football and college, I took it as a sign that I should marry that woman and become the best damn salesman Florida has ever damn seen. Now with my recent setbacks, I saw that as a chance to take my life in a new direction. I sought out a professional wrestling school and within months I was ready to take on the world.”
“I still had so much to learn though which is why I enrolled in the mental health and pro wrestling retreats ran by the legendary Stevie Harris. He said I was his top prospect, a real chip off the old block. We trained side by side and I got to see a real genuine side to him before it all went downhill.”
As the camera pans we see a woman sitting next to Colgate Carnage. Brunette, mid-thirties, wearing a look on her face that screams ‘no more’.
“But like I said, with every down there’s a chance of redemption. I sent in application videos to a few places. AWE, Survivor, Deal of No Deal – and now I’m on my way to AWE to compete for the Resilience Championship. Zach Fantana is the champ, I don’t really know much about him but he won a tournament so I guess he’s got the goods. One thing I learned from Stevie is that when you walk into a company, you need to see who’s setting the bench mark and try to be better, which makes a lot of sense. He writes a lot of letters so the first thing I’m doing when I touch down in Philadelphia is I’m going to write him a letter. Actually, first thing I’m going to do is find a motel. Hopefully something close to the arena since I don’t really have enough spending money right now to blow on bus fares or Uber.”
“Then there’s people like Carman Cambridge and Benny Stevens, well known competitors with a long history of winning and losing behind them. Do you know who they are?”
Colgate looks to the women as she stares blankly at the inflight magazine, shaking her head.
“I don’t really know them either but I looked them up on twitter and they say they’re good. That Benny guy even said everyone loses at some point and I think that’s a great attitude to have. Don’t get me wrong, I want to win but if I don’t then I’m going to learn and adapt and just be an all-round better person because of it. That’s another thing that Stevie was adamant on teaching us but I’ve always lived my life like that, ya know?”
“The others in the fight I’ll learn about when I get off the plane. I’ve been so overwhelmed by the whole thing that I only took a quick look at the card and it’s hard to remember ten people’s names when I barely know a thing about then.”
Colgate Carnage looks at the woman and notices for the first time her look of distain and wondered where he lost her over, well, since they boarded the plane in Orlando and they’re almost in Philadelphia - so it’s been a while.
“Gosh, I’ve been talking so much. You must be bored to death of me by now and I haven’t even introduced myself yet. Hi, I’m Colgate.”
The bored looking woman looks at Colgate, ready to finally tell him to shut the fuck up. She sees his eyes. Those big blues have pain and hope in them. They’re like looking into the ocean or the sky on a beautiful day. Before she can pull her thoughts back he flashes her a smile and that’s it… panties soaked. The real Colgate Crusher isn’t a wrestling move he does in the ring folks
