We’re in a room with two recliners in the middle where Ketsuekigata Z sit watching a projection on the wall. It a montage of battle scenes from movies and television shows and the opening scene of Gangs of New York comes up. Kimitsu leans over and takes some of Aokigahara’s popcorn and he shakes his head.
“Focus. This is important. Every rumble eventually turns into chaos when more people come into play. You want to treat it like this… and I payed too much for this popcorn. It ain’t my fault you finished yours.”
“I’m focused. It’s the other people that ain’t focused.”
“What do you mean?”
“They all got their main attention on the champ.”
“Well he has the title everyone wants.”
The Natives and the Irish gangs run at each other and the battle starts.
“He stops being the Champion the second the match starts. There is no chance that guy is coming out of this with his name intact. There are just too many people that want blood. He’s going to be the one with the target on his head and when he’s eliminated then the real fun will begin. Especially for me.”
Bill the Butcher starts cutting his way through the crowd. Kimitsu leans back and frames the screen with her hands. Aokigahara smirks and nudges her with his elbow.
“Why? You are one of the smallest and youngest and least experienced.”
“I’ll win because of my cunning. See everyone wants to be seen as either the top person in the ring, like the Alpha, or like an underdog. They need something to separate themselves from the pack so that they can figure out a way to win. People think you can’t win unless you’re fiercer than everyone else and try to take people on all at once. Or else you play the defensive as the scrappy underachiever that’s finally going to get their chance in the limelight as they slog through the crowd.”
“And what are you gonna do? Yeoh!”
One of the Irish women claws at a Native and bites his ear off. Aokigahara keeps howling and Kimitsu giggles.
“I’m going to do what we do best. I’m going to blend in. Stay back with the pack and hang out. I’ll strike when the time is right. I’ll claim some victims, but like you say I ain’t got the best odds in this mass of muscle and experience. So I’ll let the brutes and megalomaniacs do the work for me. They got enough hate and for each other and bluster for their own strengths.”
Bill the Butcher sees his target in the Priest and starts killing a path towards him.
“My own strength is that I know my weaknesses. This used to be a hit to my confidence but now it’s becoming something else. I know what I am good at and I will use it to avoid the problems with my shortcomings. I know I’m not going to be a powerhouse yet, or a ring wizard compared to these others in there with me. Hell I’m even a member of some of their fanclubs. I know who they are and how they fight. All I know about myself is that I’m unpredictable. That and I can last. They can take me down all they want but they won’t take me out. So when their guards are down, good and distracted, that’s when I’ll strike.”
Bill the Butcher throws a body at the Priest and when the Irish man stops it, Bill stabs him in the side. Aokigahara throws popcorn at the screen and Kimitsu gives him a sidelong look and he catches himself and nods with realization. The Butcher keeps stabbing until someone blows a horn to signal the end of the battle.
“I’ll be the snake in the grass, then the mongoose in the burrow, then the hawk in the cloud. I’ll be the guerrilla in the mist. That’s how I’ll get to be the last one standing. People that expect me to be like you or Tokyo-san are going to get a surprise. To take all this head on is not for me and It’ll be stupid to try. I was taught to adapt and react to my challenges. The circumstances in this match will turn to chaos and that is where I have lived most of my life. That is where I have the advantage of experience and I will use it to finally get something out of it. My past of fighting in the gutter is going to get me the Resilience title and whenever it is found I will own it. This is my second and best shot at winning a title I want to begin my career with it. I know my name isn’t great yet so I come from the shadows with nothing to lose. Nobody is going to pay attention and that is where they’ll go down. Or maybe I’m just talking shit to get some.”
Aokigahara looks at her as Bill makes his final demands in the movie and she shrugs.
“I’m a survivor. I can thrive either way. I made it to the final match on Massacre 1 and I was facing similar odds. I can’t let this chance slip by me again. That’s the worst feeling in the world, isn’t it? Getting so close to the goal and then failing only slightly. When the show closed and everyone was looking for the Resilience Championship Belt I stayed by the ring and took it all in. The disappointment and anger is still with me to this day so when I do strike in this match it’ll have that force behind it. So if I come at you from behind or step right up in your face you are going to suffer because I will finally make it my night... On to the next one.”
The movie fades out and the scene cuts when Aokigahara presses next on the remote.
